Livery Yards under review.
Suggestions are
that livery yards could soon be run under the
watchful eyes of local veteninary practices, this is
welcome news for thousand of horse owners UK wide.
Yards have always been able to set their own rules,
that looks likely to be set to change.
Yards may have to ensrue that they set, follow, manage
and enforce regular routines and proceedures for the wellbeing
of horses on their premsis. Some of the ares of concern that
worry owners and that may be be covered are: set collective
feeding times, ensuring clean and constant water supplies,
grazing options such as availibility of segrigated paddocks,
starvation grazing, injury paddocks and feeding pens,
first aid and general safetyand emergency proceedures and incident,
injury and situation experience.
Would your yard management regognise:
Choke.... Colic..... Lameness..... Obesity.... Neglect....??
Follow regular worming plans.....?
Do they understand horse safety?
Does your yard......
Ensure horses and ponies are all fed and have constant and clean water supplies.....
Offer a good range of dry and safe stabling and turnout options....
Ask your experiece and offer support and share knowledge with you?
How often do they walk the fenceline to check the security of the fencing?
Do they check all the horses twice daily?
It all seems to be general common sence, and to most
non horsey individules it would seem unbelievable that
yards of which house animals of one of the most expenisve
hobbies going, are able to run without scruitiny and set
standards and responsibility.
When your looking for a yard make sure it meets the
needs of both you and your horse....
Ensure you choose a yard that has a worming programe
Choose a yard with management that have their own horses
and understand horse and rider safety.
Talk to your local equine vet and ask them for recommendations.
